GODFATHER OF CRIME Version History
----------------------------------
Version 1.00 - First public release.
Version 1.10 - Maintenance Release which fixed the following bugs:
1. A bug in the scoring module caused some players
to be dropped or repeated. Fixed.
Version 1.20 Major Improvements have been added to the game:
1. A new custom ANSI art opening screen courtesy of
that superb ANSI artist Michael Arnett has been
added.
2. A modification has been made to the door driver
portion of the program to correct a bug which
was locking up OS/2 systems.
3. On game start-up 10 thugs are now added to
the map regardless if there is a player present
or not. Thanks to Bob Lucas for this change
based on his recommendation/bug report.
4. Added a routine which kills off relatives being
held hostage when the player they belong to dies.
5. Deleted the message which said your traveling
is costing more expense money which many found
aggrevating. Also the money status line turns
red when the level drops to 500 dollars or
below. Thanks go to Jay Mottern for a bug
report and list of recommendations.
6. Increased the reward for thugs to $150 per
head taken to balance the game better. The
old amount of $100.00 was just too little.
7. Changed the combat formula to make battles more
shorter and a little more realistic. Thanks go
to Jay Mottern for this change.
8. Thugs are more likely now to take a bribe
then fight, if given the chance. Several players
wanted a kinder and gentler set of thugs
to have to deal with at the beginning. This is
the best I can do to help out without affecting
play balance too much...
9. There is now a 50% chance of successfully
retreating. It was only 40% before. Changed for
same reason shown in #9 above.
10. Almost all messages are private now. This should
reduce the confusion over what is happening and
to whom.
11. Deductions of money for traveling soldiers only
affects soldiers OVER 5 instead of all of
them as before.
12. Revised the main menu to add 1 new selection
and changed another. The news file was getting
too big so now 2 news files are maintained.
The current days new is kept in one file
and yesterdays news is kept in another.
The maint.exe handles the transfer and
renaming of the files on a daily basis. It
VERY important that you only run your maint
ONCE daily and preferably after midnight.
Thanks to Steve Smith for a bug report which
forced this change.
13. Corruption is now easier to do at the lower
levels and tied more to your attributes then
before.
14. Fixed a bug in the Loan Shark routine which
was allowing people to make TOO much money
because of a math formula error.
15. DA interest in you now declines a random amount
each day to simulate police attention being
diverted by other events. Thanks to Joel
Downer for this excellent recommendation.
16. Random events happen a little more often
now to spice things up a bit and are somewhat
dependent now on your attributes.
17. Police busts are more frequent now and directly
tied to the attributes AND DA Interest In You.
18. Attribute levels now only advance to a certain
point due to direct fighting (Thugs, etc...).
Before you could max out several attributes too
quickly without having done anything else in
the game. Thanks to Joel Downer for pointing
this out in his bug report/recommendation list.
19. Income from businesses is more variable now.
Way too much money in proportion to the cost
was the problem. Should better balance the
game now.
20. Recruiting of Lieutenants is harder now. Before
you could always get them no matter what your
attributes were. Now if your resepct level is
below 3 you can forget about anyone wanting to
join your family.
21. Fixed a bug in the on-map player-to-player
fighting routine which was not updating the
other players data file with the casualties.
Thanks go to Joel Downer for the bug report
on this.
22. The text instruction file has been updated to
reflect these changes.
23. The main program and maintenance program now
create an error log file if an error occurs.
Many people requested this addition.
24. Please note that as of June 1st 1994 my FIDO
number will be changing to 1:391/3010.
Version 1.21 - Maintenance Release which fixed the following bugs:
1. Fixed the infamous runtime error 105 problem
(Finally!) introduced in version 1.20 by mistake.
2. Fixed the runtime error 100 problem which
was also introduced by accident in version 1.20.
3. Fixed a problem with negative numbers being
shown in the attributes on rare occasions.
4. Corrected some misspellings.
5. Added a "Sample.CTL" file to the package to
show what it should look like when you are done
editing it.
Version 1.22 - Added some new support to the game:
1. The game will now function on a multi-node system
but still cannot be played by more than one player
at a time. If a second node attempts to play the
game at the same time the system will now show them
the LOCKED.ANS screen and after a delay return them
back to the BBS.
2. DESQView is now supported.
3. Automatic Windows, WindowsNT, OS/2,DOS 5.0+ time
slice releasing is provided to support Multi-tasking.
4. Now supports Com Ports 1-4.
5. Now provides extended support for fossils.
6. Additional BBS dropfile formats are now
supported.
7. A new GOC.CTL is included to implement the
above features.
8. A new catalog of our products has been added.
9. A new B4UASK.DOC checklist is provided to help
operational problems.
10. A new registration form is provided which now
gives discounts on purchase of our games OR a
discount on future buys if you have previously
purchased games from me.
11. Edited the GOCOPEN.ANS Screen to delete 1 line.
It should have been 22 lines and not 23.
12. Made a few small changes in the GOCINIT.EXE,
GOCEDIT.EXE and MAINT.EXE files to correct a minor
data reading glitch.
13. Got word that the infamous "READ PAST EOF" error
surfaced again (Arghhhh!). I have made a correction
which should hopefully - and finally - kill this one
off!
Version 1.23 - Improvements and bug fixes:
1. At the request of several BBS sysops I have
adjusted the code so that Share is not required
to run the game on SINGLE NODE systems (only).
2. Fixed a bug in the game which did not save
player information when a human GodFather was
replaced by another Human after a vote.
(Reported by Michael Cox)
3. Fixed a bug in the Trade menu for Human players
which was not saving trade information and allowing
players to get rich because of the bug.
4. Legititimate businesses are not so profitable
now and are more vulnerable because there locations
are easily known.
5. DA Interests in you does not decline as much
on a daily basis as it did before.
6. Some players were clever enough to discover that
under certain conditions Player Information was not
saved if carrier was dropped. This bug has now been
fixed. No matter what happens now a players game
information will now be saved. Nice try guys!
7. An error which was giving an incorrect reward
for killing thugs when the player was the one
to kill off the last of them is fixed.
8. Finally located and fixed the problems which
were messing up the writing of the news items to
the news.dat file. The news should look correct
now.
9. An error in the code was casuing some new players
to start out with counselors. That has been fixed.
10. Corrected a grammar error in the trade menu.
Version 2.00 - Complete, and I mean complete, re-write of the game:
1. New spiffy, non-scrolling GUI.
2. On-line quick help/advice.
3. Now multi-node and on-line multi-player!
4. Several new crimes to commit.
5. Added a new business.
6. Better combat routines with a broader range of
options and reactions.
7. Players who become Bosses and/or the GodFather
now get a cut of subordinate players "action".
8. Players who become Bosses and/or the GodFather
now get new advantages AND player menu options.
9. Reduced number of crime territories from 4 to 2
in order to try to become GodFather.
10. Stats now range from 1 to 100 instead of 1 to 10.
11. Now allow storage for up to 20 messages per
player instead of the old 20 messages per GAME.
12. Consolidated the game setup files into ONE file
which initializes and sets up the game, and if
you are registered, allows you to configure
almost any option in the game.
13. Eliminated the separate maint.exe file. Now
maintenance will be performed when the first
player logs on each day.
14. A bounty can be set by Human bosses on any
player of their choice.
15. A human GodFather can now set enforcer rates
for each type of job they can do.
16. If you are related to someone by marriage you
CANNOT attack or harm them. This makes marriage
a REAL strategy now.
17. Eliminated the Recon routine from the Home Menu.
It just was not useful.
18. New combat options with thugs. You can now
attempt to talk with them and some might just
join you.
19. Corruption reactions have been redone. Now they
can say yes, no or they want to think about it.
20. Bribing an individual no longer means forever,
and there is a limit on how many at each level
you can bribe. Now it is possible that due to
firings, transfers, not being re-elected, the
individual you bribed might leave and you loose
that influence.
21. Introduced a new crimewave rule. If too many
crimes are conducted on a particular day then
the Mayor might declare a crimewave and the
police will crackdown on ALL the crime families.
22. Completely re-wrote the combat routines to take
account of reaction, morale and the possibility
that one side's soldiers/thugs might break and
run.
23. Human Bosses have more control over their Human
Underlings in their territory.
24. Registered users can now configure almost all
aspects of the game.
25. A new program just to setup the GOC.CTL
correctly is now included (DDSETUP.EXE).
26. No longer charges money for travelling around
New York with more then 5 thugs. Now there is
a temporary increase in your "DA Interest in
you" stat for each car load of soldiers who
goes with you beyond the first 5 soldiers. When
you get home this stat is returned to it's
previous value. A carload is defined as 6
people in the car.
27. More news is now published and more messages are
generated to inform players on what's going on
or has happened AND to help them out.
28. After a failed treachery attempt is made, the
player is now thrown out of the home he
committed the act in and the doors are
automatically locked to prevent him from
re-entering.
29. Human bosses must now get permission from the
GodFather to conduct a crime OR start a
business in the New York area.
30. Menu options now only show what a player can do
or afford to do on a particular day.
31. It is now much harder for lower level players
to harm or kill higher level players.
32. The old "cheesy" looking separate ansi menus
have been eliminated.
33. Many old, but aggrevating bugs have been
eliminated and the game has been cleaned up
to make it look much more professional.
34. The game is almost twice the size it was
before, so in order to reduce memory
requirements you will now find that over two
thirds of the game is now in an GOC.OVR file
which is loaded into memory only as needed.
35. Completely re-wrote the sysop.doc to make
setup and troubleshooting more easier and
helpful. Do yourself a favor: Read this
document!
Version 2.01 - The inevitable bug fix maintenance release to 2.0
1. Eliminated a screen clear problem with the
view stats while on street routine. Reported by
Dan Shore.
2. Eliminated the "EMS Error message" and beeping
from the overlay unit some were reporting as
being rather annoying. Reported by several
people.
3. Improved time slice releasing support to the
multi-taskers. Should act a little more "spry"
now when used with them and should not slow
down other programs using multi-taskers now.
4. Now using DDPlus version 7.0 with a few new
enhancements you will probably never notice or
see..
5. Record locking routines now have a loop for
those rare cases where two people try to access
the same record at the same time. Loop will
cycle 6-7 seconds or until the record is
successfully locked/unlocked. Was not a problem
in 2.0, but could have been, so I added the loop.
6. Cleaned up some spelling errors I missed
in 2.0.
7. Added a sentence in the Sysop.doc that explains
that inactive players are automatically deleted
after 10 days of game inactivity. Brought to my
attention by Louis Arseneau.
8. Changed it so that program will NOT load the
overlay into EMS unless you use the /E command
parameter. Without the use of the /E command it
will read from disk only now. Brought to my
attention by Louis Arseneau.
9. Players were not being saved correctly when
they were killed by other players and were
trapped in limbo unable to build a new home in
the game. Fixed. Identified by Kimberly Hopkins.
10. Fixed a problem with the visitors menu not
displaying when you entered another players home.
11. When you checked to see who else was visiting
in a home, it displayed "no one else is in the
game" which was incorrect. Has been fixed to
display "no one else is here" when no one else
is visiting.
12. Changed the overlay file structure to improve
performance and speed, the downside is that
the .exe file increased in size.
13. Provided a better batch file for single node
WildCat systems (See the Sample3.bat file)
14. Eliminated the constant repeat of the
"Checking Messages" player message. Will now
only happen once per day. Suggested by Ron Doty
and his game playing crew.
15. Forgot to include the HELP.TXT support file for
the DDSETUP.EXE program. Oops!
